JBF Worldwide Celebrates World Habitat Day in Guatemala
Minneapolis, MN and Guatemala - October 7, 2015 - Ambassador Jack Brewer, The Jack Brewer Foundation (JBF Worldwide) Founder and Executive Director, traveled to Guatemala to participate in events surrounding World Habitat Day in Guatemala. World Habitat Day serves as a day to reflect on the state of towns and cities, the basic right of all to adequate shelter, and remind the world that there is power and responsibility to be held to shape the future of cities and towns around the world.
Brewer arrived Tuesday, September 29, and met with Ambassador Todd Robinson, Ambassador of the United States to Guatemala, to prepare for the weeks projects. Guatemala is in recovery from recent torrential rainfalls, which is contributing to the rise of the country’s housing deficit, reaching over 1.6 million. Amb. Robinson and Amb. Brewer teamed up to address this problem through a sustainable and affordable development initiative set forth by Empower Business Latin America (EBLA).
As part of EBLA’s initiative, Brewer traveled to the city of El Bogo to unveil a new community center, built in just five days, to serve as a center for health and medical services. The community center was made of panels from agricultural fibers and reinforced by steel structures, setting the standard template for the sustainable and affordable development needed across the country.
“We understand the vulnerabilities that exist in emerging countries. We are committed to finding economically viable solutions to solve some of the most important problems in the world, such as: the deficit of housing, access to health, access to education, poverty reduction, and promoting the protection of the environment." stated EBLA General Manager Mildred Espinoza.
The EBLA’s sustainable and affordable development initiative was officially inaugurated on October 5th in commemoration of World Habitat Day in the Plaza Juan Pablo second in Paseo Cayalá, zone 16 of the Capital City. During the inauguration, Ambs. Brewer received the Leadership Award from the EBLA. He stated “I'm so honored to receive the Leadership Award on World Habitat Day in Guatemala. In the wake of a horrific tragedy, I'm humbled to be able to bring hope to underserved in this amazing country.”
World Habitat Day is celebrated the first Monday of each October, since its inception by the United Nations in 1986, stating that “good public spaces enhance community cohesion and promote health, happiness, and well-being for all citizens.” JBF Worldwide is honored to have celebrated this day with the communities of Guatemala, and is excited to support the EBLA’s sustainable and affordable development initiatives going forward.
